Fertilization & Weed Control Lawn Care Services
To get the most beautiful and relaxing yard possible, fertilizer and weed control lawn care services should begin in April – or as soon as the Minnesota snow disappears for good – and should continue through October to create a good foundation for the following year. This regimen allows you to really relax and enjoy your lawn, whether it is playing catch, grilling for an outdoor meal or just catching some rays.
Lawn care consists of two separate but equally important services.
Fertilization
Lawn health depends on nutrients absorbed by the grass roots from the soil. The purpose of fertilizing a lawn is to add the necessary nutrients in the required amounts and at the proper time to achieve the lush, green look and feel you desire.
We offer both liquid and granular fertilizers, and each has its own benefits:
- Granular fertilizer is typically used by homeowners. It leads to more lush grass, which is often a preferred result for families who may be playing or relaxing on the lawn.
- Liquid fertilizer is typically used by commercial properties. Liquid fertilizer keeps the weeds in check and the grass looking good, but not as lush. Commercial grass isn’t typically used as heavily as residential.
Weed Control
The more weeds a lawn has, the less room there is for your lawn to grow. Weeds spreading throughout your landscaping can do serious damage if they aren’t treated right away. We use liquid weed control to control weeds that are already growing. Repeated treatments are needed though, as weeds will continue to crop up every month during the growing season.
When it comes to controlling weeds, different weeds are a nuisance in different parts of the country. That’s why we use lawn care products specially blended just for us and our Central Minnesota customers.
Local Lawn Care FAQ
Q: What happens if it rains after an application?
A: Depending on how much it has rained, it may or may not affect our application. The granular fertilizer can be watered immediately. The weed control may be affected, so please wait 14 days to see the full effectiveness and call us for a free service call if necessary.
Q: How long before the weeds die after a treatment?
A: Depending on weather conditions, it may take up to 14 days for complete control. You will notice weeds curling a few days after effective treatment. The dead weeds will not disintegrate quickly, but rather remain dead in the lawn until mowed or removed. Please wait at least 14 days after the treatment before calling to request retreatment.
Q: What is the correct mowing height?
A: We ask that you mow at no less than 3 inches. This will help prevent weeds from emerging, preserve soil moisture, and deepen the roots of your lawn. The first and the last mowing of the season should be 2” to minimize disease. Leaving grass too tall while covered by snow all winter long can lead to rotting in spring.
Q: How much should I be watering?
A: Most lawns in our area will require 1-1½ inches each week, in absence of normal rainfall. The best way to determine this is to set a coffee can out in the areas of your lawn to see how long it takes to fill the can with one inch of water. Then water 2 to 4 times a week. The best time of day to water is in the morning, between 5:00 AM-10:00 PM to prevent disease and evaporation.
Q: When can pets or children go on the lawn after an application?
A: When weed controls have been applied we ask that they stay off the lawn until this product dries, which usually takes 1 to 3 hours. If granular fertilizer only is applied, you may go out on the lawn immediately after the dust settles.
Q: How long do I have to wait after an application before I can plant grass seed?
A: When broadleaf weed controls have been applied, we ask you to wait 14 days before seeding. When pre-emergent controls have been applied, we ask you to wait 60 days before seeding. If seeding must be done, we advise raking the soil to remove the chemical barrier to improve seed germination or if pre-emergent controls have not yet been applied, we can apply a starter fertilizer to these areas to help establish new grass seedlings.
Q: How long should I wait to mow after an application?
A: If weed controls have been applied, we ask you to delay cutting for 24 hours or more for the weed control to become effective.
Q: How long should I wait to water after an application?
A: If weed controls have been applied, we ask you to delay watering for 4 hours or more for the weed control to become effective.
Q: Can you get rid of my Creeping Charlie?
A: Creeping Charlie is a very persistent weed. It will take multiple applications to control this problem. We will however control this troublesome weed. We also offer free service calls with our Basic and Deluxe programs and will return free of charge between scheduled visits if necessary.
Q: If my neighbor doesn’t treat his lawn, is it worth it for me to treat mine?
A: Yes! The best defense against weeds invading your lawn is thick turf. Our program is designed to thicken your lawn and help crowd out areas susceptible to weeds. Mowing your lawn tall will also prevent many weed seeds from germinating in your lawn.
Q: What should I do about Voles in my lawn?
A: As you’re getting ready to look at your yard this spring, you may notice some vole damage. All you’ve got to do is rake a bit. Just drag the top dead grass off. After that, you may need to rake it in another direction in a week or so, but there will be new grass coming up as soon as the ground warms up. Watch the video for more details.
Q: What should I do about Snow Mold?
A: Snow mold is a common problem in lawns in springtime. In this video, you’ll see that the grass is brown and matted down. Meanwhile, below it is the grass that will actually turn green and become your lawn this year. All it takes is a bit of raking, fertilizer, sunshine, and rain to make it pop!
