Why Do I Need Lawn Overseeding?
Lawn overseeding is primarily a way to maintain a lawn, though it can also be a method of renovating one.
Lawn overseeding, especially in the fall, provides the following benefits for your lawn:
- Fills in areas of turf damaged by summer stress, diseases or insects
- Thickens and increases the density of grass, improving its appearance
- Lets the lawn get established before winter, enhancing the lawn’s ability to fight insects, drought and disease as well, if done in the fall
- Reduces or eliminates competition from summer weedy grasses, such as crabgrass, foxtails and other weeds, if done in the fall

Valley Green’s Method
Overseeding lawns in Minnesota should be done in the late summer or early fall. This is to provide the young grass some time to become established before temperatures drop and growth stops. The warm soil encourages germination, while the cool fall air stimulates growth.
The following spring, the young grass will have another few months to develop deeper roots before the summer heat sets in.
Another reason to take action in the fall is to avoid the tough, warm-season weeds like crabgrass and nutsedge, which are less active in the fall.
After overseeding takes place, our highly trained technicians monitor your project closely and make repeat visits to make sure it is progressing as planned.
