Tips For Overseeding Lawn Care

Water

After overseeding, it’s really important to water your lawn often. Beginning immediately after overseeding is finished, water 1-2 times per day (morning and evening, not during the heat of the day) until the grass is at mowing height.

Keep the top ¼” of soil moist so the seed stays moist. Cover the entire overseeded area thoroughly each time. Continue this watering schedule until the new grass reaches the height of your current grass, then return to your normal watering schedule. If the frost comes before the new grass has grown in, you can abandon watering as the grass will go dormant until spring.

Mowing

You can begin mowing after overseeding once your new grass reaches the same height you’d like your current grass to be at. To help your seeds take hold, limit driving or heavy activity in the overseeded area for 2-4 weeks to help the grass’ roots take hold.

If you need to mow and the seeds have not germinated yet, water lightly before mowing; this will help the seeds stay down and not fly around.

Weeds

If you have Valley Green for your weed control, we’ll let you know the best option for your lawn after overseeding.

If you don’t have Valley Green, avoid using any weed control on the overseeded area until it has been at mowing height for a few weeks. Some weed control agents can lower the ability of grass to germinate. The best way to handle weeds during this period is to take care of them manually. But once your overseeding takes hold, your new thick turf will help choke out any future weeds.
